No. 4 VU Women’s Tennis Sweeps No. 35 LSU, 7-0 3/21/2004 BATON ROUGE, La. — The fourth-ranked Vanderbilt women’s tennis team earned a 7-0 shutout victory over No. 35 LSU at the W.T. Robinson Stadium Sunday. With the win, the Commodores move to 5-1 in Southeastern Conference action and 15-2 overall. The Commodores got off to a strong start by taking the doubles point in convincing fashion. At second doubles, junior Audra Falk and Annie Menees opened the match with an 8-1 win over Jessica Ferguson and Marina Chiarelli of LSU. The Dores clinched the doubles point at first doubles, where VU seniors Kelly Schmandt and Aleke Tsoubanos defeated Rocio Fantilli and Lauren Seaman, 8-0. The third doubles match was suspended less than halfway to a decision, as LSU led 4-2. Schmandt kept the Vanderbilt momentum rolling in singles with a quick 6-2, 6-2 win at the second line. Freshman Amanda Fish wasted little time joining her teammate, as she defeated Camila Caliari at fourth singles, 6-3, 6-2. Sophomore Ashley Schellhas clinched the match for the Commodores at fifth singles. After splitting sets, Schellhas took the decisive frame 6-3 to ensure the Commodores of their fourth-straight victory. With the match decided, the Commodores kept the heat on in the remaining three matches. Juniors Annie Menees and Audra Falk both dropped their first sets, but rallied to take the next two sets. Menees defeated Daysi Espinal, 1-6, 7-6 (4), 1-0 (10-8) at sixth singles, and Falk won a 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 decision over Jessica Ferguson at first singles. At third singles, Tsoubanos finished the sweep with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Marina Chiarelli. The Commodores (15-2, 5-1 in the SEC) return home next weekend to play host to Alabama and Auburn at the Brownlee O. Currey Jr. Tennis Center on March 26 and 28, respectively.
