KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The No. 11 Vanderbilt Commodores continued their conference success defeating in-state rival Tennessee 6-1 at the Goodfriend Tennis Center. With the victory, Vandy improves to 9-4 overall with a perfect 4-0 SEC mark.
“It was a really solid win for us and playing in Knoxville is always a challenge,” said head coach Geoff Macdonald. “We thought that we played really solid tennis and competed hard throughout the lineup. But we’re looking forward to getting down to Athens and playing Georgia on Sunday.”
The `Dores were off to a great start in doubles, with No. 30 Ashleigh Antal and Astra Sharma maintaining their undefeated SEC status, coming off the court in an easy 8-2 win. Both No. 1 and three doubles were at 5-1, when the Vols slowly started chipping away at the Commodore lead. With VU up in a close 7-6 match on court one, it was Marie Casares and Frances Altick who clinched the doubles point over Tennessee in an 8-5 victory at three.
Vandy continued its resilient play in singles as Antal won her match on five, 6-1, 6-1 over Tiffany Tavares. No. 77 Sharma put on a show at No. 2, giving the `Dores two perfect sets in her 6-0, 6-0 victory over Eve Repic.
No. 72 Marie Casares clinched the win for VU as she defeated Ashlee Boles on court six in a 6-2, 6-1 win. The `Dores success continued with No. 84 Colton and No. 96 Altick coming out with wins in 6-2, 6-2 and 6-2, 6-4 wins respectively. At the No. 1 spot No. 9 Sydney Campbell fell to Joanna Henderson; 7-6, 4-6, 1-0.
Vanderbilt continues SEC play on the road, traveling down to No. 7 UGA to take on the Bulldogs Sunday at 4:00 p.m. CT.
