AUBURN, Ala. – The No. 10 Vanderbilt Commodores continued their trend of league success Friday afternoon, defeating the No. 49 Auburn Tigers by a score of 6-1. Friday’s win was the Commodores’ third 6-1 victory in a row. Vanderbilt now improves to 12-5 overall and 7-1 in SEC play.
The `Dores powered through doubles action, taking wins on courts two and three. After falling on court one, 8-5, to the 10th ranked tandem in the nation No. 18 Courtney Colton and Sydney Campbell took court two, 8-3. Vanderbilt clinched the tandems point at the No. 3 position with Frances Altick and Marie Casares winning their seventh victory an 8-5.
With the crucial doubles point in the Commodores possession the `Dores looked to singles to secure their seventh SEC win.
Senior Ashleigh Antal powered through her match on six, only allowing her opponent three games in her 6-1, 6-2 win. Redshirt freshman Astra Sharma (71) earned her sixth win at the No. 2 position. Sharma only has two losses to her name with 14 wins.
With the 3-0 advantage No. 100 Colton sealed the Commodore victory with a 6-2, 6-4 won on court two.
Per SEC women’s tennis guidelines the matches on courts one and four were played out. Sophomore Sydney Campbell brought in the final Commodore victory, taking court one in three; 6-3, 3-6, 7-5. The sophomore is one win away from tying the Vanderbilt single season win record held by both Julie Ditty (’99) and Kristen Radfod (’98) with 31 wins.
After taking the first set 6-4, junior Frances Altick took a hard loss as Paula de Man rallied back to take the second 7-6. The match went to a tiebreaker with De Man coming out on top.
Vandy continues conference action this Sunday as the `Dores travel to Tuscaloosa for a top-10 showdown against the No. 9 Crimson Tide.
