NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team continues its fall tournament circuit, traveling to Greenville, S.C. to take part in the annual Furman Fall Classic.
Last season the `Dores kicked off the fall in South Carolina going undefeated in singles action, winning all five flight championships. This season, head coach Geoff Macdonald sends six student-athletes to what he considers to be one of the best fall tournaments in the country.
“Furman is a really strong fall tournament every year,” said Macdonald. “You’ve got the SEC, a couple of ACC teams and Furman is always good. It’s a really beautiful place to play and it’s great competition early, which gives you a pretty good snapshot of where you are. I think it’s our 21st time going, so we love it.”
Joining the top-ranked Commodores are joined in tournament action by No. 14 Alabama, No. 18 Clemson, No. 29 South Carolina, No. 39 Florida State, No. 61 Tennessee and unranked Furman and Iowa.
While success and winning is important to the Vanderbilt squad, the fall is also meant for growth not only one the court, but also off as a cohesive team.
“The fall is very developmental, and you’re trying to develop a lot of things; individual games, doubles teams, a sense of team… it gives you a really good idea of what you need to work on and makes practice that much better.”
Tournament action will begin Friday with doubles play around 8:00 am CT, but with inclement weather in the forecast times are subject to change. Singles will begin around noon CT. For schedule updates and results follow @VandyWTennis on twitter.
