NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt scored six runs in the first and never looked back in a 14-5 win over Illinois-Chicago Sunday afternoon at Hawkins Field.

The Commodores swept the series and improved to 18-0 on the year, while the Flames fell to 4-8.

“The difference of the game was getting out to a fast start in the first inning and the two-out RBI hits we had throughout,” said Vanderbilt head coach Tim Corbin.

David Macias led off the game with a walk and moved to second on a single by Pedro Alvarez. Ryan Flaherty then singled through the right side to score Macias. Shea Robin ripped a double to right-center to score Flaherty and Alvarez to make it 3-0. Kurt Lipton, making his first career start at first, added a RBI double and Matt Meingasner came through with a RBI single to make it 5-0. Jonathan White capped off the inning with a RBI double to left.

Mickey Pingree led off the second with a homer to left off of VU starter Brett Jacobson to get Illinois-Chicago on the board.

That was the only run Jacobson would give up in six innings of work as he allowed four hits with five strikeouts and a walk to move to 4-0 on the year.

Vanderbilt added three more runs in the bottom of the third to make it 9-1. White started the scoring with a RBI triple to right-center and then scored himself on a RBI double by David Macias. Pedro Alvarez closed out the frame with a RBI single.

Macias added a RBI single in the fourth to make it 10-1. Alex Feinberg doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Matt Meingasner to make it 11-1 in the sixth.

Brian Harris singled and Carter Hawkins walked to set up Adam Cronk’s first career homer in the seventh as the Commodores extended the lead to 14-1.

UIC’s Tyler Moore belted a grand slam homer in the eighth to cap off the game scoring.

Macias and Alvarez led VU with three hits each on the afternoon, while Kurt Lipton, Matt Meingasner and Jonathan White added two hits in the winning effort.

Larry Gempp Jr. led Illinois-Chicago with two hits on the day.

The Commodores will be back in action Wednesday against Belmont at 3 p.m. at Greer Stadium.
