Vanderbilt women's tennis eyes bounce back at No. 18 South Carolina

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — No. 13 Vanderbilt women’s tennis visits Columbia for its final road regular season match against No. 18 South Carolina on Sunday.

The Dores will look to bounce back from yesterday’s 4-3 defeat against No. 1 Georgia, which dropped their away record to 5-3. Vanderbilt currently sits at seventh in the conference with three matches remaining. Last season’s matchup was claimed 4-3 by South Carolina, who has taken six of the last seven contests. The Dores own a 24-19 record against the Gamecocks in the all-time series.

Leading the singles charge for Vanderbilt is No. 16-ranked senior Célia-Belle Mohr, who looks to bounce back from a contested defeat to No. 1 Dasha Vidmanova of Georgia. Mohr has dropped consecutive matches just twice this year. Freshman Trinetra Vijayakumar notched her first ranked singles win of the season against the Bulldogs, defeating No. 82 Guillermina Grant 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. In total, Vanderbilt is 23-32 against ranked opponents across singles and doubles play. No. 45-ranked junior Bridget Stammel and senior Amy Stevens each sit on team-high four-match win streaks.

South Carolina enters tomorrow’s contest on a four-match win streak, highlighted by a 4-1 win over Alabama last Sunday. The Gamecocks, though, have struggled against top-25 opponents: they are 1-5 this season. Their lone ranked win came against No. 6 Auburn 4-2 on March 2. Sarah Hamner is the highest-ranked member of South Carolina’s team at No. 17 in the most recent ITA rankings. The senior is 18-9 on the year and has generated nine ranked wins. No. 59 Kaitlyn Carnicella and No. 97 Misa Maklin round out the Gamecocks in the singles rankings. In doubles, Carnicella and Hamner make up the No. 31-ranked pairing with nine victories together thus far.

No. 13 Vanderbilt (15-5, 8-4 SEC) takes on No. 18 South Carolina (13-7, 8-4 SEC) at noon on Sunday. Live streaming will be available online, with live stats accessible here at the start of the match.
