COLUMBUS, Ga. – Vanderbilt men’s golf freshman Tyler Mawhinney has been selected to one of college golf’s most prestigious watch lists before even taking his first swing as a Commodore, as on Thursday Golfweek and Golf Channel announced he was named to the 2026-27 Fred Haskins Award presented by Stifel Preseason Watch List.
Mawhinney was one of 25 golfers named to the preseason watch list for the Fred Haskins Award, which is the oldest individual award in collegiate golf. He was one of two incoming freshmen selected ahead of the season, as Mawhinney was joined on the list by Tennessee’s Tyler Watts.
In July, the Fleming Island, Florida, native made a run to the semifinals at the 78th U.S. Junior Amateur Championship. He advanced to match play after tying for fifth in stroke play with a 36-hole score of 3-under 138. Coming into the Round of 64 as the No. 6 seed, Mawhinney collected a 2&1 win over Rawlin Sutter. He posted an 8&7 victory against Nico Ward in the Round of 32, then a 2&1 win over Louis Klein in the Round of 16. He was also one of five Commodores to compete at the 126th U.S. Amateur Championship in Philadelphia earlier this month.
During his prep career, Mawhinney teamed up with Vanderbilt sophomore Will Hartman to win the 2025 USGA U.S. Amateur Four Ball title. Additionally, the newest Dore won the 2024 Canadian Men’s Amateur to earn an exemption into the 2025 RBC Canadian Open on the PGA TOUR, where he made the cut. He was also the medalist at the 2023 Rolex Tournament of Champions and advanced to the Round of 16 at the 2024 U.S. Amateur Championship.
Beginning in 1971, the Fred Haskins Award presented by Stifel is annually given to the top male U.S. collegiate golfer. It is the oldest individual college golf award and the only award to be voted on by players, coaches, golf SIDs, and select golf media. Past winners of the Haskins Award have captured 33 major championships and more than 400 professional tournaments around the world.
