NASHVILLE, Tenn. – On Wednesday, the College Sports Communicators (CSC) selected Vanderbilt men’s golf senior Wells Williams to its Academic All-America Division I men’s at-large team. He becomes the second Commodore golfer in program history to earn the honor.
Williams was named to the CSC Academic All-America Division I men’s at-large third team. He joins Cole Sherwood, who earned second-team honors in 2023-24, as only the Vanderbilt men’s golfers ever to be selected.
The West Point, Mississippi, native was one of 45 NCAA Division I student-athletes honored by the CSC on Wednesday. Williams, a two-time SEC Scholar Athlete of the Year, was one of two SEC golfers selected, while he was among the nine NCAA Division I golfers named in total. The CSC Academic All-America men’s at-large team consists of student-athletes who compete at the NCAA Division I level in ice hockey, lacrosse, water polo, fencing, rifle, skiing, golf, gymnastics, volleyball, and wrestling.
To be eligible for the CSC Academic All-America team, student-athletes must be at least a sophomore, maintain a 3.50 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale), and compete in 70 percent of tournaments that were team scoring events or be in the lineup during a conference championship.
Williams becomes the fourth Vanderbilt student-athlete ever to be selected to the CSC, formerly CoSIDA, Academic All-America Division I men’s at-large team, which began in 1982-83. Along with Sherwood (2023-24 second team; golf), he joins Chris Groer (1995-96 third team; tennis) and Scott Shimamoto (1991-92 second team; soccer) as the only Commodores to earn the distinction in school history.
Graduating from Vanderbilt in May with a degree in anthropology, Williams held a GPA of 3.66. He was named the SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the second straight season in April, and also earned All-America honors for his play on the course from both the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) and Golfweek.
He enjoyed a spectacular senior campaign with the Dores in 2025-26. Williams led Vanderbilt in stroke average this past season at 70.16 and posted a team-high seven top-10 finishes. He finished 10th in the PGA TOUR University rankings and earned his Korn Ferry Tour card at the conclusion of the 2026 NCAA Championship.
The All-American is set to compete in his third Korn Ferry Tour event as a professional this week at The Blue Championship in Berthoud, Colorado. Williams will be one of five Vanderbilt alumni playing at TPC Colorado starting this Thursday, as he will be joined by Sherwood, Theo Humphrey, Matthew Riedel and Jackson Van Paris.
