NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt men’s basketball Mark Byington has been named the 2026 Loos Award recipient by Coaches vs. Cancer Tennessee at the organization’s annual tip-off reception.
Established in 2017, the Loos Award was created to honor the legacy of Coach Dave Loos of Austin Peay State University, whose remarkable career was defined not only by success in basketball, but by his passionate support of the American Cancer Society’s mission. The award is given annually to an individual who embodies that same drive, compassion and purpose.
Coaches vs. Cancer Tennessee honored Byington for exemplifying these values through his personal connection to the fight against cancer and his willingness to share his story to make a difference. His impact extends far beyond the game, serving as a powerful reminder of how leadership, heart and resilience can unite communities in the pursuit of a world without cancer.
Coaches vs. Cancer Tennessee selected Byington in recognition of his commitment to the fight against cancer and his unwavering support to the American Cancer Society. Through his leadership and dedication to Coaches vs. Cancer, Coach Byington has used his platform to raise awareness, inspire action and support those affected by cancer both on and off the court.
Byington, whose girlfriend Katina Kangelaris was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer in January, has been an outspoken supporter of Coaches vs. Cancer. He and Kangelaris shared their story this spring, using Byington’s platform to inspire others to take early action in screening.
Along with Byington’s advocacy, Vanderbilt men’s basketball has a long-standing relationship with American Cancer Society and Coaches vs. Cancer Tennessee. The Commodores have made annual visits to the Nashville Hope Lodge in addition to their participation in the nationwide Coaches vs. Cancer activities each January.
Byington was presented the award at Coaches vs. Cancer Tennessee’s annual Tip-Off Reception. For more information on Coaches vs. Cancer Tennessee, American Cancer Society and how to join the fight against cancer, visit cvctn.acsgolf.org or cancer.org.
