NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Russell Corbelli has been promoted to defensive coordinator and general manager, Vanderbilt volleyball head coach Anders Nelson announced Wednesday.
“’Shatter Your Ceiling’ is our program motto, and that standard applies to our staff as much as our athletes,” Nelson said. “Russell has grown immensely over the past year, and this promotion reflects that. He has excelled as our recruiting coordinator, and stepping into the general manager role will expand his impact on roster construction and management.”
In his new role, Corbelli will oversee all facets of roster construction and management, including student-athlete compensation and revenue sharing. He will continue to work directly with Nelson and the coaching staff while integrating revenue sharing and NIL more formally into the recruiting process. His on-court responsibilities will remain unchanged.
In the reinstated program’s first season, Corbelli helped Vanderbilt advance to the quarterfinals of the Allstate SEC Volleyball Tournament. The Commodores averaged 2.9 blocks and 15.2 digs per set during the conference tournament and held Mississippi State to a .010 hitting percentage in a sweep, the team’s lowest opponent hitting percentage of the season. Vanderbilt also finished tied for fourth in the SEC in service aces, averaging 1.40 per set.
Prior to Vanderbilt, Corbelli spent three seasons at Missouri before serving as a volunteer assistant coach at Stanford, where he helped guide the Cardinal to back-to-back national championships and a 64-5 combined record across the 2018 and 2019 seasons. He also worked with first-team All-Americans Jenna Gray and Morgan Hentz, along with two-time AVCA National Player of the Year Kathryn Plummer. Corbelli also spent time at Texas A&M as a volunteer assistant coach in 2017 after coaching the Texas A&M men’s club volleyball team from 2016-17.
