Commodore Notes
Vanderbilt went 2-2 on the week, defeating Belmont 13-4 on Tuesday at First Horizon Park and taking the first game at South Carolina on Thursday. The Gamecocks won the final two games of the series on Friday and Saturday. The loss on Friday ended Vandy’s 18-game win streak, the second-longest in program history. The Commodores used a 1-run fifth inning to cruise past Belmont on Tuesday. Spencer Jones finished the game 3-for-4 with a team-high four RBI. Young and Keegan totaled two RBI each. Vandy rode a stellar pitching performance on Thursday in Columbia to shutout the Gamecocks 10-0. Chris McElvain worked a career-high tying 7.0 shutout innings, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out five. Nelson Berkwich and Donye Evans covered the final two frames, working 1.0 inning apiece. South Carolina evened the series with an 8-2 win on Friday. Vanderbilt fell to an early deficit, as South Carolina scored seven runs across the first two frames. The Commodores rallied for a pair of runs across the middle innings, but were unable to come any closer as the Gamecocks held on for the win. South Carolina took the series with an 8-6 win on Saturday. The two teams traded runs most of the afternoon as Vanderbilt got out to an early lead. South Carolina scored six runs across the fourth and fifth innings before adding insurance with two runs in the seventh. Vandy plated one in the eighth to chip away at the deficit before placing the tying run aboard in the ninth, but the Gamecocks would hold on for the victory to claim the series win.
