Commodore Notes
Vanderbilt extended its win streak to 16 games after defeating Michigan on Tuesday and sweeping the three-game weekend series against Missouri to open SEC play. Tate Kolwyck provided the heroics on Tuesday as Vandy trailed Michigan 4-2 entering the bottom of the ninth. Down to the last out, Kolwyck knocked a two-run double the tie the game, took third on a throwing error, and scored the winning run on the very next pitch, a passed ball to the backstop. The Commodores matched their season-high for runs with a 15-2 victory on Friday against Missouri to start conference play. Chris McElvain totaled eight strikeouts over 6.0 innings to earn his third win on the season. Enrique Bradfield Jr. homered for his 100th career hit and finished just a double shy of the cycle. Carter Holton and Christian Little combined to shut out the Tigers on Saturday, as Vanderbilt earned a 6-0 victory to clinch the series. Holton (4-0) delivered another impressive outing on the mound, notching his fourth quality start on the season. The freshman southpaw struck out 10 batters over seven scoreless innings, marking his second consecutive game with double-digit strikeouts. Vanderbilt used a four-run seventh inning to grab the sweep on Sunday with a 7-4 win. The Commodores hit back-to-back home runs twice, including Kolwyck’s game-tying home run in the seventh followed by a Carter Young go-ahead blast. Nelson Berkwich (1-0) picked up his first career win with a strong relief outing. Berkwich worked 1.1 scoreless innings, allowing one hit while striking out three. Thomas Schultz earned his fourth save on the year, holding the Tigers hitless across the final 1.2 frames, while registering three strikeouts.
