Commodore Notes
Vanderbilt stretched its win streak to nine games after going a perfect 5-0 last week. The Commodores defeated Central Arkansas 5-2 last Tuesday for their 25th consecutive midweek win at home. Vandy then headed to Hawaii and swept the four-game series against the Rainbow Warriors. Junior Chris McElvain struck out a career-best 13 batters in Game 1 while Tate Kolwyck led the offense with a three-RBI game. Freshman Carter Holton took a perfect game into the seventh inning in Game 1 of Saturday’s doubleheader. Holton notched the first seven-inning complete game for Vanderbilt since March 25, 2018, when Mason Hickman went the full seven against LSU. Javier Vaz had a five-RBI game and the team registered a season-high 19 hits. Vaz stayed hot in Game 2, clubbing his first career grand slam. The Commodores outscored Hawaii 25-2 in the doubleheader. Spencer Jones provided the heroics in the series finale on Sunday. Trailing 1-0 in the sixth, Jones belted a two-run homer to left field to put Vandy in front 2-1. Freshman Devin Futrell picked up his team-leading third win of the season, working 1.0 scoreless inning in relief. Thomas Schultz notched his third save of the year, covering the final 2.0 frames. Schultz stranded the tying run at third in the bottom of the ninth with a groundout to end the ballgame.
