Dores host nationally-ranked Fighting Irish looking for second straight win to begin the year

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt looks to improve to 2-0 on the young season as the Commodores host No. 12 Notre Dame at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Vanderbilt, which is receiving votes in this week’s IWLCA/ILWomen Division I Poll, is hosting a ranked opponent for the second time in as many seasons. The Dores defeated No. 24 Colorado in overtime in 2021.

Notre Dame enters the weekend 1-1 after falling to No. 11 Michigan on Sunday. The Dores lead the all-time series with Notre Dame 11-10, but will be looking for their first win in the series since 2011.

The Commodores opened the season last Saturday with an 18-13 win over Liberty. Gabby Fornia totaled eight points on six assists and two goals to earn Attack Player of the Week honors from the American Athletic Conference. Paige Gunning earned a spot on the AAC Weekly Honor Roll after a 13-save performance. Lila Huddles led the Dores with four goals.

Admission to Saturday’s game at the Vanderbilt Lacrosse Complex is free. Fans can also enjoy a free stream of the contest on Youtube.

• Vanderbilt has taken on 11 ranked teams since the beginning of the 2020 season, going 2-8 in those contests. Both wins came at home.
• Notre Dame is one of five ranked opponents on the 2022 schedule.
• Vanderbilt won its eighth straight home opener Saturday with an 18-13 victory over Liberty.
• The Commodores went 8-1 at home in 2021 and are 17-6 during Hewitt’s tenure.
