Commodores' Comeback Falls Short

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – No. 5 Vanderbilt women’s tennis suffered a tough loss to No. 6 South Carolina on Friday at the Vanderbilt Currey Tennis Center, 4-0. 
 
Starting off the match with doubles play, the Dores split courts with the Gamecocks leaving the deciding doubles point to Christina Rosca and Georgia Drummy on court 2 battling against USC’s Rachel Rohrabacher and Paige Cline. 
 
Rosca and Drummy commanded the lead early in the match however, the Commodore duo ultimately fell short in the tiebreaker, 7-6 (4) to give the Gamecocks an early 1-0 lead. 
 
Eager to make a comeback in singles, the Commodores stormed the court ready to bounce back. 
 
After the completion of the first-set across all courts, the Dores led on two courts with freshman Carolyn Campana winning 6-1 on Court 5 followed by senior Dvorak collecting a 6-1 lead on Court 4. 
 
No. 6 Fernanda Contreras suffered the Commodores first singles loss, falling to No. 7 Ingrid Gamarra Martins, 7-5, 6-4 advancing the Gamecock’s lead to 2-0. 
 
Shortly after, No. 97 Emily Smith dropped the match to South Carolina’s Kennedy Wicker. Smith fought to earn a comeback second set but fell short in the tiebreaker, 6-2, 7-6 (4).
 
With four courts remaining, the Gamecocks led 3-0. 
 
Clinching the match for South Carolina, 4-0, No. 37 Paige Cline defeated No. 13 Christina Rosca in a straight-set win, 6-2, 7-6 (4) to earn the match victory for the Gamecocks. 
 
The Commodores look to bounce back on Sunday as they take on No. 31 Florida at the Currey Tennis Center.
