Dores Open up Miami Spring Invite Undefeated in Singles

Coral Gables, Fla.- The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team kicked off its 2019 season by defeating Kentucky in singles play at the Miami Spring Invite, with all eight players earning match victories.

Making her debut as a Vanderbilt Commodore, freshman Georgia Drummy earned her first collegiate win by defeating fellow freshman, Alexis Merrill from Kentucky. Drummy opened up strong in the first set holding Merrill to only three points. Closing the match in a straight-set victory, Drummy defeated Merill, 6-3, 6-3.

Continuing her successful debut, Drummy competed in doubles play with junior Emma Kurtz. The pair took the court against Bruin duo Rheeya Doshi and Inci Ogut. Competing in their first match as a tandem, Drummy and Kurtz earned a dominant 6-4 victory against the Bruins to mark the Dores’ only doubles victory of the day.

“It feels amazing to be officially a part of the Vanderbilt team, said Drummy. “The girls have made me feel so welcome and playing for each other is brilliant.”

With the Dores kicking off the 2019 season undefeated in singles play, head coach Geoff Macdonald said he sees a lot of potential in this team as it continues the Invite.

“All of today’s matches were very close and competitive but everyone on the team stepped up and were fantastic,” Macdonald said. “We haven’t competed since November so there is obviously a little bit of rust but the mental game of this team and how they hung in there to battle through and earn victories was impressive. I am looking forward to watching thrilling and strong tennis tomorrow.”

The Commodores open up the second day of the Miami Invite on Saturday competing against Kentucky in doubles play and closing out the day with singles versus Miami.
