NASHVILLE, Tenn. – On Sunday’s final day of the June Stewart Invitational, the Vanderbilt women’s tennis team remained undefeated on the weekend. The Commodores dominated the courts in doubles against Texas Tech followed by a sweep against Middle Tennessee State in singles play.
Opening the day in doubles, regional champion Dore duo Christina Rosca and Summer Dvorak shut out Texas Tech’s Miller/Peet in a 6-0 defeat to start the day strong for the Commodores.
Fernanda Contreras and Carolyn Campana maintained their tournament winning streak while taking on Texas Tech’s Stocia/Bridgforth, earning a 6-1 victory.
Senior Emily Smith and junior Emma Kurtz owned their court against Texas Tech by defeating Sella/Dilaura in a 6-2 win for the Dores.
Closing doubles play for the Commodores, sophomores Lauren Gish and Amanda Meyer battled against Middle Tennessee’s Barnard/Burrows to win the match, 6-1.
Heading into singles play, Contreras began the day strong for Vandy with a straight-set win over Middle Tennessee’s Magazzini, 6-1, 6-3.
Freshman Campana capped her first undefeated tournament as a Commodore with a win against MTSU’s Burrows, 7-5, 6-2.
The senior Dvorak continued her tournament success in taking on MTSU’s Kermit. Dvorak conquered a straight-set win, 6-2, 6-1 followed by fellow senior Emily Smith dominating the court in a shutout over MTSU’s Lee Barnard, 6-0, 6-0.
Rosca took on MTSU’s Zani Barnard and earned a 6-3 win in the first set followed by a shutout in the second set to earn a set win, 6-0.
Kurtz maintained success for the Dores while competing against MTSU’s Zirilli, achieving a 6-3 victory in the first set followed by a 7-5 clinch in the second set.
Closing the successful day for the Commodores, Meyer took the court against MTSU’s Herrero and dominated the court in a 6-0, 6-2 victory.
Vanderbilt head coach Geoff Macdonald said he was thrilled with the Dores’ successful run at the June Stewart Invitational.
“In all of my years of coaching, I have never had a team go undefeated in a tournament, not losing a single match,so this is incredible,” Macdonald said. “I am very impressed with this team and how they competed in the June Stewart. They started strong and kept momentum the entire tournament earning straight wins throughout the weekend. It was a very successful June Stewart Invitational, and I am very proud of this team.”
The Commodores look to continue their success as they head to Athens, Ga. next weekend to compete in the UGA Fall Invitational.
