Kayla Peterson helped Vanderbilt lacrosse to a 17-8 win over Butler on Sunday with five goals and an assist, playing her usual role as the leader of the Commodore attack. The senior from Hagerstown, Md. also clinched a pair of personal milestones in VU’s first conference win of the season, and was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for Week 7 on Tuesday in recognition of her performance.

Peterson scored her second goal of the afternoon just over 10 minutes into the contest, putting Vanderbilt ahead, 5-1. The goal was Peterson’s 100th collegiate point, and also gave her a new career-high with 31 goals on the season.

“Kayla has created her own opportunities. She’s a self-made player,” Vanderbilt head coach Cathy Swezey said. “She’s an awesome player. She gives so much and works so hard on the field. I couldn’t be happier for her and her achievement, and what it does for us to have her on the squad.”

Peterson’s three additional goals stretched her season total to 34 through nine games, placing her second in the BIG EAST and 18th nationally with 3.78 goals per game. She also leads the conference and is third in Division I with 6.56 shots on goal per game.

The senior’s lone assist of the game came on a pass to her twin sister, Leah Peterson, for her first goal of the season.

This is Peterson’s second appearance on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll this season. The first came for her Week 4 performance, when she matched a program-record by scoring eight goals against Louisville on February 27. Vanderbilt has been recognized on all seven editions of this season’s BIG EAST weekly awards.

The Commodores begin a three-game homestand on Wednesday afternoon, when VU hosts Oregon at 3 p.m. at the VU Soccer/Lacrosse Complex.
