BIG EAST Weekly Awards Release
Vanderbilt sophomore attacker Emily Mathewson was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for Week 5 on Tuesday, continuing Vanderbilt’s perfect streak of representation on the conference’s weekly awards.
Mathewson scored eight goals in two games last week, split evenly over a pair of four-goal games in her hometown of Philadelphia. The sophomore sharpshooter delivered the highlight of Vanderbilt’s week, scoring the overtime winner against La Salle in an 11-10 win Thursday night.
“She’s a girl who works her tail off every single day,” Vanderbilt head coach Cathy Swezey said. “She works really hard at getting a lot of leverage on her shots and getting power on them. She’s just a great shooter and Philadelphia is a great place for her to play.”
The Garnet Valley High School product has already set career-high totals of 26 goals and 33 points through seven games as a sophomore, surpassing her freshman year totals of 17 goals and 30 points in 15 games. She has scored four or more goals in five of VU’s seven games this season.
Mathewson was 5-for-8 on free position shots this past week, accounting for more than half of her goals. She is tied for sixth nationally with 1.71 free position goals per game.
“She’s very dangerous in the eight-meter,” Swezey said. “People are going to continue to foul her because she knows how to get to the cage. You could have it in the scouting report not to foul Emily, but you’re going to foul her. She’s going to get on the eight-meter and she’s toxic from there.”
This is Mathewson’s second appearance on the conference’s weekly awards, with both honors coming after visits to Philadelphia. Mathewson was named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week on March 21, 2017, after scoring eight points on five goals and three assists in a 14-12 win at Villanova on March 18, 2017.
Vanderbilt opens BIG EAST Conference play at home against No. 6 Florida this Sunday, March 18, at 1 p.m. at the VU Soccer/Lacrosse Complex. Admission is free and the first 250 fans receive a Vanderbilt lacrosse t-shirt.
