CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team continued success on day two of the Miami Spring Invite, going 5-2 in singles play against Kentucky and 2-2 versus Miami in doubles action.
Five Commodores remain undefeated on the weekend in singles, with Fernanda Contreras the only student-athlete taking both wins in straight sets.
Against UK, No. 19 Sydney Campbell and No. 28 Christina Rosca picked up their second straight victories over ranked foes. After falling in a first set tiebreaker 7-6(4), Campbell dug deep to take down 12th-ranked Aldila Sutjiadi, 6-7(4), 6-2, 7-6(4). Rosca defeated No. 74 Akvile Parazinskaite 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 for her third ranked win and 14th victory as a Commodore (14-1).
Senior Georgina Sellyn earned her second-straight three set victory of the tournament, defeating the Wildcats’ Emily Fanning handedly in the final set, 6-4, 1-6, 6-2. Contreras only allowed UK freshman Milica Novakovic four games in her 6-3, 6-1 victory.
In tandems, the Commodores changed up doubles pairings with Contreras and Astra Sharma playing together for their first match of the year and fourth overall. Sharma/Contreras picked up a commanding victory over the Hurricanes’ Silvia Fuentes/Yolimar Ogando, 6-1. After pulling off a 7-5 win over Dominika Paterova/Estela Perez-Somarriba, Emma Kurtz and Rosca own a 2-0 record on the weekend.
The ‘Dores conclude tournament action Sunday morning at 8 am CT, taking on Texas Tech in doubles.
