With the regular-season opener now less than a week away, the Vanderbilt women will have their final preseason tune-up on Sunday, hosting Union University in an exhibition game at Memorial Gym. Here’s a closer look at the game:
l Update on the Commodores: The new-look Commodores, featuring first-year head coach Stephanie White, got their first taste of game action last Sunday, when they rolled past Bellarmine 97-63 in an exhibition contest at Memorial Gym. Freshmen guard Cierra Walker scored a team-high 18 points and junior Rachel Bell added 16 for the Commodores. Senior Marqu’es Webb notched a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Erin Whalen had 13 points, and Kayla Overbeck and Christa Reed added 11 each.
l The skinny on Union University: The Bulldogs, a Division II program from Jackson, Tenn., are coming off a highly-impressive season in which they posted a 28-4 record and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA D-II tournament. The team, coached by Mark Campbell, went 20-2 in the Gulf South Conference. Union has already played one SEC team in an exhibition game this season, falling to Kentucky, 78-60, on Thursday night in Lexington. Chelsea Bodiford and Tiffany Rechis each had 15 points for Union.
l New season, new style: Vanderbilt first-year head coach Stephanie White is implementing an up-tempo style this season — and it was on full display in last week’s win over Bellarmine. The Commodores erupted for 58 points in the second half, and had six players reach double figures. White, who was named head coach on May 24, arrived at Vanderbilt after spending two seasons as head coach of the WNBA’s Indiana Fever. She led the team to the playoffs each season, including guiding the Fever to the 2015 WNBA Finals in her rookie season to become the first rookie coach in league history to take a team to the finals.
l More experience for the newcomers: Vanderbilt is expected to rely heavily this season on a touted cast of five freshman, and Sunday’s game against Union will give the members of the group another test. Last Sunday, the freshmen combined to score 42 points despite the absence of Kaleigh Clemons-Green, who missed the game with an injury. The five freshmen — LeaLea Carter, Erin Whalen, Kayla Overbeck, Cierra Walker and Clemons-Green — formed one of highest-rated recruiting classes in the program’s history, including being ranked No. 6 by Blue Star Basketball, No. 9 by Prospects Nation and No. 17 by ESPN HoopGurlz.
l Looking ahead: Vanderbilt is tuning up for its regular-season opener on Nov. 11, when the Commodores host Kennesaw State at Memorial Gym. The game will mark the official debut for White.
l Special guest for season opener: The Commodores announced this week that Mayor Megan Barry is slated to attend Vanderbilt’s season opener against Kennesaw State. Barry, who graduated from the Owen Graduate School of Management at Vanderbilt, will be recognized during a brief ceremony before the game, and will be presented with a commemorative game ball.
