LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The No. 1 Vanderbilt women’s tennis team began the 2015 USTA/ITA Regional championships with a bang going undefeated in two rounds of main draw doubles action..

“We played six doubles matches and won them all, and we won six out of seven singles matches,” said head coach Geoff Macdonald. “So you’ve got three Vanderbilt teams in the quarters of doubles and six players in the round of 32. So a good day, a very long day, but I’m really pleased with the effort. Overall it was a great first day of regionals.”

The second-seeded team of Courtney Colton and Astra Sharma played consistent and determined tennis throughout the day, only giving up a combined four games in their 8-1, and 8-3 victories over teams from ETSU and Western Kentucky.

Vanderbilt’s two other doubles teams competing, fourth-seeded Sydney Campbell and Fernanda Contreras and eighth-seeded Frances Altick and Ellie Yates, both had close and very competitive matches on Friday but all three teams look forward to competing in Saturday’s semifinals.

The Commodores played exceptional tennis on Friday, with Top-seeded Sydney Campbell starting things off on the right note in the round of 64 with a commanding 6-2, 6-0 win over Cincinnati’s Bellinger.

Third-seeded Colton dropped only one game in her dominant 6-0, 6-1 win over MTSU’s Candeloro. Altick, a senior from Monroe, La. swept her opponent, Emily Struble (Miami of Ohio) in both sets, walking away with a 6-0, 6-0 victory. Sharma advanced on a swift 6-2, 6-1 win over Miami of Ohio’s Anastasiia Vasiukhina.

Both freshmen, Summer Dvorak and Contreras, earned regional victories. Contreras rolled through her match against Miami of Ohio’s Shapovalova; 6-3, 6-0. Dvorak went to three sets after winning her first set 6-3, but allowing MTSU the second set. The Laguna Beach, Calif. native pulled out the win for Vandy with a third set 6-0 sweep.

VU’s lone loss of the day came in a close 6-4, 6-4 victory by Tennessee’s Ashley Bongart over Vandy Yates.
