NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Vanderbilt lacrosse team is barely three weeks into its first season as a member of the BIG EAST Conference, and already Vanderbilt junior Mallory Schonk is making a name for herself among her league counterparts.
For the second straight week, Schonk was named the BIG EAST Attacker of the Week on Tuesday. Schonk, who leads all of Division I with 22 points, has been awarded both such honors the league has handed it out so far. In addition, senior Meggie Ramzy was named to the BIG EAST’s weekly honor roll after she scored six goals in two games.
Schonk, a 5-foot-6 attacker from Perry Hall, Md., continued her hot start with seven goals and an assist in Vanderbilt’s two games last week — a 16-9 victory over Boston University last Friday and a 13-9 loss to No. 20 Denver on Monday.
Against BU, she scored a career-high four goals for the second straight game and dished out an assist. She followed up with a hat trick against Denver on just four shots. In fact, she has scored a team-high 14 goals, which is tied with Florida’s Shannon Gilroy as the most in the BIG EAST, on just 19 shots. That’s an impressive shooting percentage of .736.
Schonk, who was a unanimous preseason All-BIG EAST selection, not only leads the country with 22 points but also ranks sixth in goals (14) and fifth in assists (8), along with teammate Jill Doherty.
For Ramzy, she enjoyed an impressive two-game stretch with back-to-back three-goal games. The captain from Lutherville, Md., only took eight shots and also collected three ground balls and caused two turnovers.
