'Dores have good swims on first day of quad meet

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Vanderbilt swim team wrapped up the first day of action at the Western Kentucky quad meet with some good swims. The ‘Dores finished the evening with 10 top three finishes, through seven events at the Bill Powell Natatorium.

The Commodores started the evening with a second place finish in the 200-yard medley relay by Chrissy Oberg, Elly Faulkner, Kayla Moran and Caroline Thomas. The group finished with a time of 1:47.41. VU’s B team finished shortly behind them in fourth place.

Vanderbilt swam both the 200- and 50-yard freestyles during Friday’s action. Carrie Bencic took second in the 200, while Thomas paced the ‘Dores in the 50 free for third place. Margaux Georgiadis (4th), Lauren Egan (10th) and Lauren Torres (11th) rounded out the Commodores in the 200 free, while Moran (5th), Melissa Roberts (7th) and Christina Wang (8th) finished off the group in the 50.

The 200-yard butterfly saw the only individual top finish for Vanderbilt. Alexandra Blankenburg touched the wall at 2:05.35, to claim the top spot. Coming in behind her was classmate Rachel Koch, who finished at 2:07.61, good for third in the event.

In the 100-yard breaststroke, Faulkner paced the ‘Dores with a second place finish, with a time of 1:05.20. Freshman Kathryn Coughlin touched the wall in a tie for third place with a time of 1:06.11.

Vanderbilt ended the night on a high note, taking first place in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The team of Hannah Martin, Roberts, Thomas and Moran finished with a time of 3:32.09.
