LAX defeats Presbyterian, 22-3

CLINTON, S.C. – The Commodore women’s lacrosse team had an impressive 2011 season opener Saturday, winning 22-3 at Presbyterian College.

Junior All-American Ally Carey kicked off the scoring just 17 seconds into the game off an assist from classmate Courtney Kirk. Kirk, one of five Vanderbilt players making their first career start, would score VU’s second goal a minute later.

The Commodore starters scored seven goals in the first six minutes, with two coming from senior Katherine Denkler and another three by junior Hannah Clark. A total of 10 Commodores scored in the first half as VU took a 16-0 lead into the break.

Junior goalkeeper started the game but was not forced to make a save in the first half, as VU’s defense did not allow a shot. Sophomore Chelsea Pasfield played the second half, making one save.

Clark and Denkler each scored three goals to pace the Commodores. Other multiple goal scorers included junior Kelly Connors, sophomore Carly Linthicum, and freshmen Katie Mastropieri and Abby Wheeler.

The Commodores held a 19-8 edge in draw controls, led by junior Emily Franke’s five. Freshman Alyssa Dunlap had a team-high caused turnovers, while sophomore Paige Cahill and freshman Katie Mastropieri each picked up three ground balls.

The Commodores return home to Nashville for a four-game homestand beginning this Wednesday, Feb. 16, at 1 p.m. CT against No. 3 North Carolina. That contest will be followed by home games against Canisius (Feb. 22), No. 2 Northwestern (Feb. 27) and Cincinnati (March 2).

All Commodore home games will be played at the Vanderbilt Lacrosse Complex, located on campus behind the McGugin Center on Jess Neely Drive.
