Commodore Notes
Vanderbilt improved to 30-3 on the year winning the team’s eighth straight series with the club’s fifth sweep of the year and first sweep against #21 Alabama since 1986 along with Tuesday’s win over Middle Tennessee State… The top-ranked Commodores wasted no time beating the Blue Raiders on Tuesday scoring seven runs in the first two innings to cruise to victory… Jason Esposito’s three-run homer in the second inning was his second home run of the season… The win also improved the Dores’ midweek record to a perfect 8-0… Freshman T.J. Pecoraro earned his fifth win of the year pitching two innings… Vanderbilt pounded the Crimson Tide 11-3 on Friday night in a series-opening win… Anthony Gomez led the way in the victory going 3-for-4 and Curt Casali drove in three runs… Sonny Gray won his seventh game of the year giving up two unearned runs over six innings… The Commodores posted the team’s fourth shutout victory of the year on Saturday in a 7-0 win behind starter Grayson Garvin… The lefty surrendered just four hits and fanned seven over 7.1 innings allowing only one Crimson Tide base runner to reach third base… Gomez, Aaron Westlake and Jason Esposito all had two hits in the win… VU finished off a sweep of Alabama on Sunday with an 11-6 victory in front of a season-best crowd of 3,357… The win over the Tide pushed the team’s winning streak to 10 games and SEC winning streak to a school record eight games… Mike Yastrzemski went 3-for-3 and scored three runs with Casali hitting his second home run of the year, a three-run shot in the six-run seventh… Bryan Johns added his first homer of the year in the seventh with a two-run round tripper to mark the first time this year the Commodores have hit two home runs in the same inning… Freshman Tony Kemp made one of the all-time great catches in VU history with a diving catch on the warning track in the eighth inning with the bases loaded and two outs in a four-run game… Gomez had four multi-hit games last week to extend his hitting streak to 28 games… With Sunday’s attendance the three-game series attendance reached 9,616 – second-most in Hawkins Field history… Monday night marks the first Coaches Show for Coach Corbin at The Commodore Grill inside Holiday Inn -Vanderbilt. The show runs from 6-7 p.m. on 97.1 FM.
