ANN ARBOR, Mich. – After a 7-0 win over Memphis last Friday, the Vanderbilt men’s tennis team travels to Michigan this weekend for a pair of dual matches. The Commodores open the weekend on Saturday against Washington and will face Michigan on Sunday afternoon. Both matches will be played at Michigan’s Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor, Mich.
The Commodores hold a 4-1 record entering the weekend, with wins over Memphis, Santa Clara, Lipscomb and Tennessee Tech. Vanderbilt’s only loss of the season came at the hands of Nebraska in the opening round of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. The ‘Dores are ranked No. 44 by the ITA, while sophomore Ryan Lipman is the 43rd ranked singles player.
Washington, ranked No. 23 in the nation, fell to Michigan, 4-3, Friday evening. The loss was the first of the season for the Huskies, who had won six consecutive matches to open up the season. The Huskies boast three singles players who earned individual rankings to being the 2011 season – sophomore Kyle McMorrow stands at No. 81, senior Martin Kildahl is No. 83 and senior Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan holds the No. 92 spot. In doubles, Nedunchezhiyan and McMorrow are the 30th ranked pair in the nation, while Kildahl and senior Tobi Obenaus are ranked 33rd.
After defeating Washington, Michigan moves to 4-2 on the season, which includes a 6-1 win over No. 21 Wake Forest in the consolation round of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. Senior Jason Jung began the spring season as the 35th ranked singles player in the nation, and he and teammate Evan King are ranked at No. 28 in doubles.
