The Vanderbilt women’s golf team ended the first day of the Bryan National Collegiate in a tie for third with a team total of 291. Freshman Lauren Stratton and sophomore Marina Alex led the Commodores on Friday, each scoring a one-under par, 71, which tied them for sixth individually.

The Commodores are tied for third with Florida State with the 291. Tennessee leads the tournament after the first round with a 287, and co-host Wake Forest is two strokes back with a 289.

Alex and Stratton are three strokes behind the individual leader, Michelle Shin of Wake Forest, who ended the first day of play with a four-under par, 68.

Junior Megan Grehan posted a two-over par, 74, for Vanderbilt in the first round, while freshman Anna Leigh Keith tallied a three-over, 75, and sophomore Andrea Messer fired a seven-over, 79, for the Commodores.

“It was one of those things watching us, that we didn’t get off to the greatest starts,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “But, Stratton and Grehan made some birdies down the stretch, so it was nice to see them with a good finish. We were able to make up some ground on the last few holes.

“It was good for them to feel what it was like to have a good finish. We talked about perseverance, and it’s good to see it pay off.

“None of them really thought they played really well,” continued Allen. “But, they had fun playing today. That was really good to see.”

The second round continues on Saturday at the Bryan Park Players Course in Greensboro, N.C.
