Second Round Results

The Vanderbilt women’s golf team posted the second-best total of the day, a four-under par, 284, to move up seven spots in the team standings to a tie for third place after the second round of the Tar Heel Invitational at the UNC Finley Golf Course with a score of 582 (298-284). Sophomore Marina Alex, who fired a four-under par, 68, on Saturday, leads the Commodore contingent with a two-round score of five-under par, 139.

The Commodores are tied with Auburn for third place.

Alex, who is in second place in the individual standings heading into the final round, bogeyed her first hole and then reeled off six birdies before bogeying her 17th hole, which was the eighth hole on the par-72, 6,285-yard layout. Alex is looking for her first individual title of her collegiate career, and trails Sara-Maude Juneau by one stroke heading into the final round.

Freshman Anna Leigh Keith also had a good day for the Commodores, posting a three-under par, 69, the lowest score of her short collegiate career, and is in a tie for fourth with a two-under par, 142. Keith had four birdies and one bogey in her round on Saturday.

“I was really proud of them today for the effort, for the attitudes and for putting together a solid round,” said head coach Greg Allen. “I challenged them before the round to be the best team today. Only Michigan State had a better round. Marina looks like she’s on cruise control out there and it was nice to see Anna Leigh put together her first under par round as a Commodore.”

Other counting scores for Vanderbilt were Brooke Goodwin’s 73 and Megan Grehan’s 74. For the tournament, Goodwin has a score of 149 (76-73, T-41) and Grehan is at 152 (78-74, T-63). Freshman Lauren Stratton finished one stroke back of Goodwin and Grehan on Saturday with a 75, and has a two-round total of 156 (81-75, T-81) heading into the final round on Sunday.

Michigan State continues to lead the tournament, and has a total of 568 (285-283), Alabama is 11 strokes back of the Spartans with a 579 (290-289).

The final round of the Tar Heel Invitational begins on Sunday morning.
