Vanderbilt golfer Marina Alex dropped her opening round match of the U.S. Amateur on Wednesday at the Old Warson Course in St. Louis, Mo., to Stephanie Sherlock of Canada, two-up.
Alex, who finished third in stroke play competition on Tuesday, had a hard fought match with Sherlock on Wednesday, and came from three-down to even the match at all square on hole 13 and then took the lead on the 15th hole, when she parred the 420-yard par four and Sherlock bogeyed.
On the following hole, a 485-yard par five, Alex made birdie, while Sherlock made eagle to move the match back to all square. Sherlock then finished par-par on 17 and 18, and Alex finished bogey-bogey to drop the match, two-down.
Alex had three birdies on the day.
