Georgia Leads Mason Rudolph After Day One 9/15/2006 Georgia shot a tournament single-round record 280 and leads two-time defending national champion Duke by three shots after the first round of the Mason Rudolph Women’s Championship at Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin. The three-day, 15-team tournament continues Saturday at 8 a.m. CT. The previous tournament single-round record was carded by UCLA, who posted a 281 in the first round of the 2003 tournament. Three Bulldogs posted below-par scores, including Mallory Hetzel and Taylor Leon who each shot a 3-under par 69 and are tied with UCLA’s Tiffany Joh for first place. The Commodores finished the first round Friday with a team score of 301 for 12th place. Vanderbilt sophomore Jacqui Concolino shot an even par 72 and is tied with five other players for 15th place. Concolino rebounded after shooting 4-over par through the first eight holes with four birdies, including three on the back nine. Senior Kristen Svicarovich shot a two-over par 74 to tie for 24th place. Other Vanderbilt players competing include senior Chris Brady (tied for 45th place with a 76), sophomore Amber Lundskog (tied for 67th position with a 79) and junior Liebelei Lawrence (tied for 70th place with an 80). “We’re certainly disappointed with our scores today, but I’m encouraged with the way we finished,” Vanderbilt head coach Martha Richards Freitag said. “We showed a lot of nerves at the start of the day, but we settled down and played well on the second nine. “We’ve dug ourselves a pretty big hole, but it’s a 54-hole tournament and we’re capable of producing the same low rounds that Duke and Georgia shot today. We need to put two good days together.” Vanderbilt freshman Brooke Goodwin and junior Julie Bartholomew are playing unattached from the Commodore squad. Goodwin shot a 2-over par 74 to tie for 37th place. Bartholomew carded a 4-over par 76 and is tied for 45th position. “I’m really excited to see how well Brooke has started her first collegiate tournament,” Freitag said. “I know she feels she can play even better. Julie had a good first round as well.” Vanderbilt resumes action Saturday at 9:17 a.m. CT. Mason Rudolph Women’s Championship Individual Standings Vanderbilt Scores Individual Vanderbilt Players |
