Women’s Golf Finishes 11th at NCAA Regionals 5/14/2006
Vanderbilt’s Season Ends, Tying for 11th Place at NCAA East Regional Vanderbilt’s season came to close Saturday when the Commodores finished tied for 11th place after final-round play at the NCAA Women’s Golf East Regional at Bryan Park Golf Course (par 72, 6,386 yards) in Browns Summit, N.C. Vanderbilt (296-300-295–891) completed play 7-over-par for the round, finishing four strokes shy of qualifying for the NCAA Championship finals May 23-26, in Columbus, Ohio. “We’re extremely disappointed not to be going to Ohio State for the finals,” Vanderbilt head coach Martha Richards Freitag said. “If you have one bad week this time of year, the season is over. That’s the toughest part about golf.” Tennessee took first place (292-286-286–864), shooting even-par for the tournament. Vanderbilt freshman Jacqui Concolino (71-73-72–216) shot an even-par 72 Saturday to tie for 10th place. Concolino, who shot even-par for the tournament, missed the individual cut for the NCAA Championship by one stroke. Concolino finished seven strokes behind tournament medalist Marci Turner (70-70-69–209) of Tennessee. Chris Brady (71-76-72–219) tied for 18th place after posting an even-par 72 on Saturday. After a slow start, the junior went 3-under-par on her final nine holes to finish even for the day. She finished 3-over-par for the tournament. Junior Kristen Svicarovich (72-74-74–220) tied for 20th position after posting a 2-over-par 74 on the final round. She finished 4-over-par for the event. Other competing Commodores included sophomores Julie Bartholomew (84-77-77–238) and Liebeli Lawrence (82-79-83–244). “We’ve had a good year and played a lot of good golf,” Freitag said. “If we take this disappointment and use it for motivation next season, it will be a lesson well learned.” Vanderbilt was making its sixth appearance at the NCAA Regionals under Freitag.
