Women’s Golf Tied For 11th Place After Second Round 5/12/2006
Vanderbilt shot a 12-over-par 300 and slipped into a tie for 11th place following second-round action Friday at the NCAA Women’s Golf East Regional at Bryan Park Golf Course (par 72, 6,386 yards) in Browns Summit, N.C. The Commodores (296-300–596) are tied with Virginia (3030-293–596) after struggling to finish their rounds strong. Vanderbilt players collectively shot 9-over-par on the final six holes of the course. LSU (288-288–576) leads the team standings after posting its second consecutive even-par round of the tournament. Vanderbilt is looking to finish Saturday’s final round among the top eight teams at the regional to qualify for the NCAA Championship, May 23-26, in Columbus, Ohio. The Commodores are four shots behind North Carolina (296-296–592) for the final qualifying position. Vanderbilt freshman Jacqui Concolino (71-73–144) leads all Commodore players in 13th place at even-par. Concolino shot a 1-over-par 73 in the second round and is five shots behind individual leader Jenny Suh (69-70–139) of Alabama. Junior Kristen Svicarovich shot a 2-over-par 74 on Friday and is tied for 17th place at 2-over-par. She shot even-par on the back nine thanks in part to a birdie on the 16th hole. Junior Chris Brady (71-76–147) started well, but struggled on the back nine to slip into a tie for 25th place at 3-over-par. Brady posted birdies on three of her first five holes and was 1-under on the front nine holes. However, she went 5-over on the final nine holes, with a triple-bogey on the 15th hole. “We’re playing hard and playing a majority of the holes very well,” Vanderbilt head coach Martha Richards Freitag said. “But we have to play a complete round and not finish weak. We’ve got nothing to be afraid of now. We just need to go out Saturday and play good, aggressive golf.” Other competing Commodores include sophomores Liebeli Lawrence (82-79–161) and Julie Bartholomew (84-77–161). Vanderbilt will start final-round play Saturday by teeing off from the 10th hole at 8 a.m. CT. AGATE NCAA East Regional Teams 1. LSU, 288-288–576 (E); 2. Tennessee, 292-286–578 (+2); 3.
