Vanderbilt’s Concolino Finishes Fourth
Franklin, Tenn. — Maria Martinez birdied the final two holes, posting a 2-under par 70 en route to claiming medalist honors and helping Auburn edge Tennessee for its second consecutive Southeastern Conference Women’s Golf Championship Sunday at Vanderbilt Legends Club.
Martinez (73+68+70=211), along with teammates Margaret Shirley (77+69+71=217), who finished third, and Abigale Schepperle (74+78+76=228) each birdied the 18th hole to help Auburn (300+282+293=875) outlast a strong surge from Tennessee (301+287+288=876).
The Lady Volunteers carded a final round low 288 as a team, led by Marci Turner (73+73+69=215) who finished in second place, four shots behind Martinez.
Vanderbilt’s Jacqui Concolino (74+73+71=218) posted four birdies on the day and went 2-under par on the back nine to take fourth place.
“I left a lot of putts on the course today,” Concolino said. “I always seem to play the back nine better. The front nine has gotten the best of me all weekend.”
The Commodores (303+287+297=887) took fourth place, two shots behind Georgia (301+285+299=885). Arkansas (304+297+296=897) was fifth.
Liebelei Lawrence (77+72+72=221) tied for seventh place after registering birdies on three of the final four holes. Kristen Svicarovich (76+69+77=222) tied for 12th while Chris Brady (76+73+77=226) tied for 27th place. Julie Bartholomew (78+79+82=239) tied for 51st position.
Windy conditions allowed only six players to shoot below par on Sunday.
The victory marked Auburn’s sixth SEC women’s golf title. The Tigers edged Georgia in a playoff last season.
