Vanderbilt’s Svicarovich Vaults to Third at SEC Women’s Golf Championship

Franklin, Tenn. — Auburn shot a second round best 282 Saturday to maintain its first place standing at the Southeastern Conference Women’s Golf Championship Saturday at the Vanderbilt Legends Club.

Auburn placed three golfers in the Top 10 individual standings led by Maria Martinez’s (73+68=141) tournament low 4-under par 68 on Saturday. Margaret Shirley (77+69=146) tied for fourth for the Tigers posting a 3-under par 69 while teammate Jessica Lovell (76-71=147) went 1-under for the day to tie for seventh place.

The Tigers (300+282=582) are four shots ahead of second place Georgia (301+285=586). Tennessee (301+287=588) is third. Host Vanderbilt is fourth (303+287=590).

Georgia’s Taylor Leon equaled the tournament low posted by Martinez on Saturday. Leon (75-68=143) moved into second place after carding a 4-under par for the day.

Vanderbilt’s Kristen Svicarovich (76-69=145) matched her career low, recording a 3-under par 69 on day two to vault into third place overall. Svicarovich, who started the day tied for 15th place, birdied holes 13 through 15 to post her best single-day score of the season.

Svicarovich also carded a 69 in second round play at the 2005 NCAA East Regional.

“I started off the day making a lot of pars,” Svicarovich said. “Then as I got to No. 13, I saw (Vanderbilt’s) Liebelei Lawrence birdie the 13th hole and (Vanderbilt’s) Jacqui Concolino to my left birdie No. 11. I decided it was time for me to make some birdies as well.”

Concolino (74+73=147) finished 1-over on Saturday to tie for seventh place. Lawrence (77+72=149) shot even par to tie teammate Chris Brady (76+73=149) for 17th place. Fellow Commodore Julie Bartholomew (78+79=157) is tied for 46th place.

Final round action begins Sunday at 8:30 a.m. on the Ironhorse course (6,217 yards, par 72).  Vanderbilt will start at the first hole at 8:30 a.m. Tournament leader Auburn will tee off from hole No. 1 beginning at 9:15 a.m.
