Brady First, VU Golfers Fourth in Athens 3/25/2006
ATHENS, GA- With cold and gusty conditions on the University of Georgia Golf Course, Vanderbilt posted a 310 score to sit in fourth place at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic golf tournament Saturday. The Commodores received a big boost from Chris Brady, whose 73 earned her a share of the second round lead. Host Georgia established a five stroke lead (603) with Wake Forest second and Auburn third, three shots ahead of the Commodores (615). Individually, Brady is tied at 148 with Auburn’s Nicole Hage and Washington’s Amber Prange. Kristen Svicarovich shot 76, Amber Lundskog posted an 80, Jacqui Concolino had a tough back nine and finished with an 81 while Julie Bartholomew came in at 83. “Brady had a great round,” Coach Martha Richards Freitag said. “She was just two shots off the best round of the day and I think she is poised to make a real run tomorrow. The course played very difficult today, the greens were fast and bumpy and the locations tricky so you could hit it close and if you were on the wrong side of the hole you were just trying to get down in two.” “I was very pleased with Kristen Svicarovich’s round,” Freitag continued. “She made a good comeback and is hitting the ball better. Amber still has the affects of the flu and fought hard. In fact, for the most part I thought we competed hard all day.” Freitag noted that Concolino had an unusual final eight holes for the freshman that has already won twice this spring. The Orlando product was even after 10 holes before suffering a triple bogey on the 11th and back-to-back double bogeys on 13 and 14. “I think the key tomorrow is patience,” Freitag says. “We are going to have a shotgun start and that means it will take six hours to play. The golfer that can stay patient while waiting on the tee box should have an advantage over someone who gets distracted during the delays.” Liebelei Lawrence has not played as yet in Athens, recovering from an ankle sprain. She walked most of the hilly course today and is expected to play as an individual tomorrow. The final round begins Sunday morning at 9:00. |
