Women’s Golfers at Georgia Tourney 3/23/2006 Coach Martha Richards Freitag has her Vanderbilt golf team at the 34th Annual Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic in Athens, Ga., this Friday through Sunday. The tournament will be played over the par 72, University of Georgia Golf Course and hosted by the Georgia Bulldogs. Vanderbilt’s lineup has a new look as Liebelei Lawrence is still sidelined with an ankle sprain. Lawrence will compete as an individual, not a part of the entered Commodore team, if her ankle seems fit but taking her place is fellow sophomore Julie Bartholomew. “This is an ideal situation for Julie and we have a lot of confidence in her,” Freitag says. “This is Julie’s home area (Pope High School in Marietta, Ga.) and she has played this course perhaps 30 times so she knows it very well. In addition, Julie has been working very hard and is excited to be in our lineup.” The Georgia Golf Course has many good memories for Freitag and the Commodores. “I love coaching here,” Freitag admits. “This is the site of our 281 team score in the final round of the 2002 SEC Championship when Nicki Cutler shot 67 and this is also where I played my last NCAA Championship in 1993. It is one of my favorite courses.” The field includes Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Coastal Carolina, East Carolina, Florida State, Furman, Georgia, Kent State, Michigan State, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Ohio State, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest and Washington. Host Georgia is the defending champion (892) and Kelly Froelich was the medalist (218). Duke’s ten-under par 282 in the second round of the 2000 tournament is the meet record while the Blue Devils’ Brittany Lang shot 66 in 2004 for the individual record.
