Eastern Illinois Defeats Vanderbilt, 2-1

Nashville, Tenn. — Jeff Stewardson scored his first goal of the season with 28 seconds remaining to lead Eastern Illinois to a 2-1 come-from-behind win over the Vanderbilt Commodores tonight in cool, damp and foggy conditions at Vanderbilt Stadium.

Box Score

It is the first home loss for the Commodores who now own a 6-8-1 overall record, 2-5 in Missouri Valley Conference action, and the first league win for the Panthers who are now 5-10, 1-5 in the MVC.

Stewardson’s game winner was from 6-yards out and came after a behind-the-back touch pass from Mick Galeski in front of the net off a feed from Ryan Luckett.

Trailing 1-0, the Panthers tied the game at the 85:05 mark when EIU’s leading scorer Jimmy Klatter scored his 10th goal of the season. His header from six-yards out went in the left side of the net off a pass from Galeski and a cross from Luckett. VU goalkeeper Jamie Burns came out to defend Galeski who made a quick pass to Klatter for the score.

Junior John Krause collected his 11th goal of the season giving Vanderbilt a 1-0 lead at the 10:59 mark. Krause kicked in a rebound off Eastern Illinois goalkeeper Mike Sims after he deflected a shot by Joe Germanese. Krause and Germanese passed the ball back and forth with Germanese turning a Panther defender around. Sims made a diving save on the right side off Germanese’s 15-yard attempt, but Krause was in position to kick in the deflection.

Vanderbilt outshot Eastern Illinois 11-9 led by Germanese and Krause with three each. Sims totaled two saves giving up the one goal, while Burns numbered three saves and allowed two goals.

The Commodores host Bradley Sunday (Oct. 24) at noon at the Vanderbilt Soccer Stadium. Eastern Illinois travels to Western Kentucky for a Sunday contest.
