Women’s Soccer Heads to Philadelphia

9/9/2004

The Vanderbilt women’s soccer team takes to the road again this weekend, heading to Philadelphia for the Penn Soccer Invitational. The Commodores will face the University of Pennsylvania on Friday and Princeton University on Sunday.

“I am looking forward to our trip this weekend,” Head Coach Ronnie Coveleskie Hill said. “This will be the first time we have taken our team to the Northeast. We have a challenging weekend ahead of us as a team — we are playing two exceptional teams in Princeton, currently ranked No. 18 in the country and Penn. Both teams have proven to be dynamic, intense and extremely competitive. This will be a great challenge for our young team.”

The team hopes to rebound from a disappointing start to its season, as well as its weekend of tournament results. The Commodores traveled to the University of Alabama-Birmingham last weekend and lost two games to Minnesota and UAB.

“After a difficult weekend in Birmingham, the team had a quality week of training in preparation for our upcoming matches. I firmly believe that patience is the theme with this team. At this stage of the year, we are laying the foundation for the rest of our season. Our results last week were not as we had hoped, but I am confident that we learned form our experiences and will rise to our next challenge in Philadelphia,” Coveleskie Hill said.

The Commodores saw action from two injured players last weekend giving them the silver lining in the storm. The teams hopes their recovery and playing time will only increase.

“We are hopeful to see some minutes from two of our injured players this weekend. Monica Buff and Susan McAleavey are both recovering from severe injuries this summer during competition and we are hopeful that this weekend will provide us an opportunity to give them some quality minutes against tough competition,” Hill noted.

The Commodores face off against Penn on Friday at 5:00 p.m. EST and then against Princeton on Sunday at Noon. Follow the Commodore website (vucommodores.com) for updates and stories on the team’s trip.
