Commodores Defeat Drury, 5-0, in Home Opener 9/6/2004
Commodores Defeat Drury, 5-0, in Home Opener Nashville, Tenn. — Newcomers John Krause (6-0, Jr., MF, Holliston, Mass.) and Joe Germanese (5-10, Fr., F, Ballwin, Mo.) and junior captain Brent Richard (6-1, Jr., M, Sugarland, Texas) each scored a goal and had an assist helping lead Vanderbilt to a 5-0 win over Drury today at the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex. Five different Commodores scored goals in the contest, including Krause, Germanese, Richard, Jamie Gilbert (6-0, So., M, Broken Arrow, Okla.) and Casey Steen (5-8, So., F, Metairie, La.). The five goals were the most since last season’s 5-3 win over Belmont on Sept. 26. The Commodores scored at the 12:39 mark when Krause kicked it in from 8-yards out on a pass from Germanese. Less that a minute later, Germanese hit a shot from 12-yards out from Brent Richard that hit the left side of the net for a 2-0 Vanderbilt lead. “We were clicking out there today,” VU Head Coach Tim McClements said. “We have the potential to be a good team, but it takes time when you have a lot of young guys. After we scored that first goal, we played the way we are capable of playing.” Richard scored his first goal of the season at the 53:23 mark, giving Vanderbilt a 3-0 lead. He took a pass from Krause and Pat Ryan and scored with a kick from 15-yards out that went to the right-hand upper corner of the net. Drury numbered nine shots, including four on goal. The Panthers best scoring chance came at the 68:58 mark when Chris Greatwich hit the post on a free kick 20-yards out after a Vanderbilt foul. Brandon Donat then hit the rebound wide left. Just over a minute later, VU’s Gilbert scored his first goal of the season when his shot went straight up the middle from 15-yards out. Steen ended the Commodore scoring at the 84:04 mark on a pass from Jerry Yirenkyi (5-7, Fr., F, Sanatoga, Penn.) and Brendan Matthews (5-7, Sr., M, Lenexa, Kan.). Vanderbilt totaled 17 shots in the match, six on goal, led by Krause with four. Drury’s goalkeeper Tommy Fulmer had one save in the contest, while VU’s Kenny Schoeni (6-2, So., GK, Cincinnati, Ohio) and Adam Guzzo (5-11, Sr., GK, Birmingham, Ala.) combined for the shutout totaling four saves. “Both goalies did a great job,” McClements said. “But without a doubt, Tim Lonergan (6-0, So., D, Dallas, Texas) was the Man of the Game. We’ve been very hard on him and he stepped up today and was very valuable.” The Commodores play Davidson and UNC-Greensboro this weekend at the Davidsion adidas Classic Sept. 10 and Sept. 12. Vanderbilt hosts the Vanderbilt PUMA Classic Sept. 17 & 19.
