PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. — Junior Catherine Newman clinched a spot in the2008 Riviera ITA All-American championship draw after defeating Kentucky’s Megan Broderick in a three-set match Wednesday at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
After dropping the first set 6-4, Newman battled back to claim the final two sets, 6-4, 6-0. The win over No. 55 Broderick, improves her fall mark to 4-2.
With the win, Newman improves to 3-0 in the west coast tournament, with all three victories coming against top-100 players.
Senior Courtney Ulery bowed out of consolation play as she fell to Duke¹s Amanda Granson, 6-2, 6-2.
In doubles action, the 35th-ranked duo of Newman and Ulery was eliminated from the doubles play as they were defeated by Georgia’s 38th-ranked pair of Monika Dancevic and Nadja Gilchrist.
