WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – It was a good day for the Vanderbilt women’s tennis team as all three Commodores advanced to tomorrow’s singles quarterfinals at the ITA Southeast Regionals Saturday. The Commodore trio of Catherine Newman, Keilly Ulery and Jackie Wu went a combined 6-0 Saturday.
Newman, the tournament’s No. 6 overall seed, defeated No. 55 Megan Broderick of Kentucky in three sets, 6-1, 6-7(4), 6-1 to advance to tomorrow’s elite-eight. The win over Broderick pushes Newman’s fall mark to 11-4. Earlier in the day, Newman battled back to top Wake Forest’s Christian Tara in three sets. After falling 3-6 in the first set, Newman took control in the second and third sets as she closed out with 6-3, 6-2 victory.
Wu picked her 10th win of the fall campaign by dispatching Tennessee’s Rosalia Alda in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2 to advance to the round of 16. Three hours later, Wu upset the tournament’s No. 5 seed, Katarina Tsang of North Carolina in consecutive sets, 6-4, 6-2. With the win, Wu improves her fall mark to 11-1.
Ulery became the third `Dore to advance to tomorrow’s quarterfinals by defeating Sasha Kulikova of Wake Forest in three sets, 3-6, 6-0, 7-5. Kulikova, ranked No. 50, came into the match as the tournament’s eighth overall seed. Earlier in the day, Ulery battled back to defeat UNC-Greensboro’s Alejandra Guerra, 1-6, 7-6(4), 6-2.
The doubles quarterfinals will begin on Sunday at 9 a.m., followed by the singles quarterfinals.
