PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. — Vanderbilt¹s Catherine Newman picked up her fourth win of the week before bowing out at the Riviera ITA-All American Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
The junior defeated Georgia’s Nadja Gilchrist in three sets, 6-4, 0-6, 6-3 in the first round of the main-draw consolation bracket before being eliminated by fifth-ranked Amanda Fink of Southern California in three sets.
“Catherine played hard all week out here, and I couldn’t be more proud of her efforts,” assistant coach Aleke Tsoubanos said. “She played against some of the best players in the country this week and she had a lot of success against them.”
The Commodore closed out the week playing nine matches in her last eight days. The junior from Greensboro, N.C. recorded an impressive 4-2 record against some of the nation’s best players this week. In the last seven days,Newman posted four wins over ranked opponents, including three consecutive in the ITA qualifying draw.
