Newman and K. Ulery defeat MTSU duo

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The doubles tandem of Catherine Newman and Keilly Ulery advanced to doubles draw round of 32 as they defeated Middle Tennessee State’s duo of Marietta Bigus and Alex Dachos 8-4 in the first round of the ITA Southeast Regional Championships Thursday. With the win, the Commdore duo advances to tomorrow’s second round where they will play Yevgeniya Stupak and Paula Jamie of ETSU.

“I thought Catherine and Keilly played a really good doubles match against a good team from MTSU,” assistant coach Aleke Tsoubanos said. “Hopefully we can keep it going tomorrow in both doubles and singles.”

The other Commodore pair of Jackie Wu and Chelsea Preeg received a bye to advance to tomorrow’s second round. The Vanderbilt duo will face off against UNC-Greensboro team of Alejandra Guerra and Arielle Van Strolley in tomorrow’s second round. Guerra and Van Strolley defeated Eastern Carolina’s duo of Brooke Walter and Varinia Soler 8-4 Thursday.

Competition will begin tomorrow with singles action starting at 8:30 a.m.
