Moving Up in Cabo

Vanderbilt shoots a 10-under 274 in second round Monday

LOS CABOS, Mexico — The Vanderbilt men’s golf team surged to second place on the Cabo Collegiate team leaderboard after firing a 10-under-par 274 on Monday at the Cabo Del Sol Ocean Course.

Freshman William Moll carded six birdies and fired a 5-under 66 to lead Vanderbilt in their second round, with two other Commodores, junior Harrison Ott and sophomore Reid Davenport, also scoring in the 60s with each firing a 3-under 68.

Vanderbilt shot the second-lowest round of the day at the star-studded tournament and moved up three spots on the team leaderboard to second place after carding a combined 21 birdies and one eagle. The Commodores trail team-leader Arizona by three strokes heading into the final round Tuesday.

Other Commodore counting scores Monday were a pair of 72’s from senior John Augenstein and freshman Matthew Reidel.

“We knew it was a great opportunity going into today to try to put ourselves in a good position,” Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh said. “We did a much better job taking care of the simple things today. It’s fun to see our guys step up and play a really good round and to do it with all five guys. I think that’s the most encouraging part is seeing our team grow and be coachable.

“(Ott) is doing a lot of things really solid and playing with a lot of consistency. (Moll) and (Davenport) were great today and did a great job bouncing back after yesterday. It’s important for us to continue to have all fives guys competing with the right mindset.”

Ott is in a tie for sixth to lead all Vanderbilt players on the individual leaderboard after two rounds with Moll second for the Commodores in a tie for 11th. Davenport and Riedel are in a tie for 27th with Augenstein in a tie for 37th.

“(Tuesday) is another great chance to take another good step,” Limbaugh said. “It’s about this team and our actions and continuing to learn how to focus on the right things. All that will be tested tomorrow and as a competitor, that’s what we should want.”

The final round takes place Tuesday with live results available on Golfstat.com.
