CARY, N.C. — For the second straight season, graduate Célia-Belle Mohr and sophomore Sophia Webster have advanced to the doubles quarterfinals at the ITA All-American Championships after another dominant performance on Thursday at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, North Carolina.
The No. 12 ranked pair faced No. 25 Jasmine Conway and Anna Zyryanova of NC State in the doubles round of 32. After dropping the opening game, Mohr and Webster netted two in a row to grab a 2-1 lead. The Wolfpack evened the score up with a break at 2-2 before the Dores responded with a break of their own to take a 3-2 lead, an advantage they held for the remainder of the set. Mohr and Webster converted three out of the next four games to claim the opener 6-3. Set two played out almost identically to the first: a 2-2 tie led to a 3-2 Vanderbilt lead, ultimately resulting in another 6-3 set win, this time for the match victory. Mohr and Webster each generated an ace in the contest en route to outscoring the Wolfpack 59-44. The duo has a 110-68 point advantage against their opponents so far and have broken 10 out of 15 service games over the last two days.
Vandy’s No. 37 ranked junior Valeria Ray and senior Bridget Stammel looked to follow suite against No. 7 Ange Oby Kajuru and Susanna Maltby from North Carolina. The Dores went up 2-1 out of the gate but were stymied afterwards, dropping five straight and falling in the first set 6-2. The second frame began tied 2-2 before the Tar Heels dug in, winning four of the next five games to eliminate Ray and Stammel from the main draw.
Despite the loss, both Ray and Stammel remain alive in the singles consolation bracket. After dropping out of the singles main draw yesterday, No. 45 Ray bounced back in consolation qualifying against No. 38 Zyryanova. The first set went back and forth, eventually moving to a 5-5 tie before Ray closed the door, taking the final two games and claiming the set 7-5. Ray grabbed full control in the second, outpacing Zyryanova to pull away 6-1 and earn a berth into the singles consolation round of 32. No. 27 Stammel matched up against No. 22 Mia Kupres of Texas A&M; last season, Stammel defeated Kupres in three sets to help Vanderbilt down the then-defending champion Aggies 5-2. Stammel again had Kupres’ number, notching a 6-4, 6-2 match victory to advance. If Ray and Stammel make their way into the consolation final, they will secure qualification for the NCAA Singles & Doubles Championships taking place in November.
Mohr and Webster are set to face North Carolina’s No. 1 ranked Reese Brantmeier and Alanis Hamilton at 3:30 p.m, marking the highest-ranked matchup for the Dore duo. In the singles consolation round of 32, Ray will face No. 37 Anastasiia Grechkina of Pepperdine at 11 a.m. while Stammel is slated for an 8 a.m. match against NC State’s No. 74 Gabriella Broadfoot.
