Mohr, Webster Advance

Ranked duo downs Harvard, moves on to the round of 16 at NCAA Championships

Waco, Texas — Vanderbilt women’s tennis is advancing to the round of 16 at the NCAA Doubles Championships behind a 6-4, 6-3 opening round win from senior Célia-Belle Mohr and freshman Sophia Webster.

“Solid match for Celia and Sophia today,” head coach Aleke Tsoubanos said. “Conditions for everyone were tricky but we handled them pretty well. I’m excited for the opportunity to move on in this tournament and go again tomorrow.”

The No. 29 ranked pair opened their tournament against Harvard’s Kavya Karra and Stephanie Yakoff. Although the first few games were back and forth, the Dores did not trail once throughout the match. Mohr and Webster pulled away with the score tied 3-3 in the first set, generating three unforced Crimson errors en route to a 6-4 set win. The Dores captured 30 of the 49 total points in the second, including the only ace of the contest, in a 6-3 set victory to seal the match.

Webster becomes the first freshman to win an NCAA Championships match in women’s program history. For Mohr, the Vanderbilt senior has now picked up wins in three separate NCAA Championship tournaments, the most since Astra Sharma won a match in the 2015 singles tournament as well as in 2018 singles and doubles.

Mohr and Webster return tomorrow for a matchup against North Carolina’s Susanna Maltby and Carson Tanguilig at Baylor’s Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, Texas.
