NASHVILLE, Tenn. — For the first time this season, No. 2 ranked graduate Célia-Belle Mohr took the court in singles, headlining another day of multiple wins for the Vanderbilt women’s tennis team at the June Stewart Invitational on Saturday.
Vanderbilt matched up against Ole Miss in singles play, with Mohr kicking things off at the top spot versus Brooklyn Olson. The Commodore picked up right where she left off last season, cruising to a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Olson. In the No. 2 spot for the Dores was sophomore Trinetra Vijayakumar going against Andrea Nova. Vijayakumar pulled out a 7-6 (8) first set before Nova evened the match with a 7-5 win in the second frame. In what became a marathon of a third set, Vijayakumar endured to come out on top 14-12 and give Vanderbilt its second win of the day.
The Dores continued the momentum at No. 3 and No. 4 singles with sophomore Sophia Webster and senior Sonya Macavei, respectively. Both matches also went the distance, as Webster hung on for a 7-5, 5-7,10-7 victory against Riley Crowder while Macavei completed a 4-6, 7-6 (3), 10-7 comeback over Lipscomb’s top singles player, Sofiia Paladi. Doubles play was all Vandy, with No. 12 Mohr and Webster adding another fall win with a 6-2 defeat of Kentucky’s Asuncion Jadue and Reese Sager. Macavei and Vijayakumar closed out the day for the black and gold, coming out on top 7-5 versus Marina Fuduric and Ellie Myers.
Sunday marks the final day of the June Stewart Invitational. Vanderbilt will begin in the later portion of tomorrow’s matches, facing a combination of Lipscomb and Purdue in doubles at 11:30 a.m. before matching up with Kentucky in singles to follow.
