NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Mike Minor and Russell Brewer combined to three-hit Kansas in a 7-1 win Friday night at Hawkins Field.
Minor (2-0) carried a no-hitter until the sixth inning when Robby Price singled up the middle with two outs. The Chapel Hill, Tenn., native threw 6.2 innings of three-hit baseball, allowing one run while tying his career high with nine strikeouts.
“Mike can command his fastball and throw his changeup and breaking ball for strikes,” said Vanderbilt head coach Tim Corbin. “It helps when you have a quality guy like him on Friday’s throwing strikes.”
Vanderbilt improved to 4-1 on the year, with Kansas dropping to 2-5.
The Dores jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first when David Macias and Dominic de la Osa singled and scored on Andrew Giobbi’s two-out single to right.
VU added a run in the fourth when Giobbi led off with a double and scored on a RBI infield hit by Shea Robin.
Macias led off the fifth with a double to left and scored on a RBI single by de la Osa. The Miami, Fla., native stole second and scored on back-to-back throwing errors by catcher Buck Afenir and centerfielder Nick Faunce to make it 5-0.
Brad French’s sacrifice RBI extended the lead to 6-0 in the sixth.
Kansas got on the board in the seventh when Preston Land doubled with one out and scored on Buck Afenir’s triple to centerfield. Minor struck out Ryne Price for the second out of the frame before giving way to Russell Brewer who got Tony Thompson to fly to center to end the threat.
Brewer closed out the game with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief. He struck out two and did not allow a run for his second straight solid outing.
“I really like the way Russell comes in and throw strikes,” said Corbin. “He comes in and makes key pitches in key moments and is not afraid. This is a guy who didn’t pitch any for us last year. I just like him and call him the Quiet Assassin, he comes in and does his job and doesn’t say much.”
Andrew Giobbi and Alex Feinberg singled to start out the eighth, with Giobbi eventually scoring on a passed ball for the final run of the game.
Giobbi finished the game with three hits and two RBI with seniors Dominic de la Osa, David Macias and Shea Robin each chipping in with two hits each.
“I talked about execution with the offense before the game and about hitting the ball the other way,” said Corbin. “I think it is a step up on how we executed over the last few games and I hope this confidence carries into the rest of the games this weekend.”
The Commodores will face Iowa tomorrow at 4 p.m. The Hawkeyes defeated Xavier, 12-9 in the opening game of the Music City Classic Friday afternoon.
