Mike Baxter Named Team’s Most Valuable Player 5/23/2005 Junior first baseman Mike Baxter was presented with the Jeff Peeples Most Valuable Player Award prior to Sunday’s game with Florida. The award is voted on by the Commodore players, coaching staff and support staff and recognizes a player for his outstanding performance on the field throughout the season. Baxter leads the team in eight statistical categories, including a .377 batting average and leads the Southeastern Conference in stolen bases. He earned SEC and National Player of the Week honors and his three-run homerun over right field against Ole Miss was featured on ESPN’s SportsCenter Xpress Clips. The award pays tribute to Jeff Peeples who was a four-year letterwinner for the Commodores. A three-time All-SEC selection, he helped guide the Commodores to three SEC Tournaments and the 1973 SEC Championship. Peeples was one of only two pitchers in SEC history to lead the league in earned run average for two consecutive seasons. He also led the league in victories and strikeouts in 1973.
